UPS Racing: Sustainability

UPS will celebrate its 15th season as the official delivery company of NASCAR in 2014, and through UPS Trackside Services, the world’s largest package delivery company provides critical behind-the-scenes pick-up and delivery services for race teams, sponsors, racing officials, vendors and news media at every NASCAR Sprint Cup Series event across the country.

This year, UPS made a significant move by becoming an official NASCAR Green partner, a partnership that works to educate NASCAR fans and reduce the sport’s environmental impact through strategic partnerships while validating green technologies.

Through NASCAR Green, UPS delivers the NASCAR Green Clean Air Tree Planting program, which includes having 90 trees planted in each market where NASCAR competes, along with an additional donation of more than 6,000 trees to help offset the emissions from all racing sanctioned by NASCAR. In total, more than 8,000 trees will be planted in 2013 as a result of the partnership.

UPS made another substantial investment in 2013 to upgrade the UPS Trackside Services unit with solar technology in order to reduce the environmental impact of the operation. The entire Trackside Services operation has been outfitted with Suniva solar panels to help supplement the energy needed to run the operation. The mobile unit features a PV (photovoltaic) powered system with a large array of battery power. The system also provides for a generator and access to shore power. 12V DC microgrid powers essential features of the trailer and a complete lighting retrofit features solid-state lighting (LEDs) powered by a 24V DC microgrid.

Additionally, solar panels were installed on the electric mini UPS package car used to make deliveries around the track, and the truck responsible for transporting the operation from race to race was replaced with a more environmentally friendly truck equipped with a D.E.F system. The D.E.F system produces nearly net-zero pollution and eliminates of the release of black soot into the air, virtually eliminating airborne pollutants emitted from the stack.

The UPS Trackside Services unit is on track to cut its fuel consumption to run the trailer by nearly 50% from 2012 to 2013. The mini cart used by the Trackside staff has run completely on solar this season and in total, the program will have a savings of more than 700 pounds of CO2 as a result of sustainable upgrades made to the operation.

For customers at the track and around the world, UPS provides carbon neutral shipping options to offset the climate impact of carbon emissions that result from their shipments. UPS purchases certified carbon (CO2) offsets to give customers a way to balance out the emissions produced by the transportation of shipments.

As a way to provide our NASCAR customers with the ability to extend their own commitment to sustainability, UPS Trackside Services continues to provide carbon neutral shipping at the track. By shipping carbon neutral with UPS TSS, customers offset the climate impact of carbon emissions that result from their shipments. By working with globally recognized certification and validation groups, UPS has extended its ongoing efforts to reduce fuel use, conserve energy, recycle, and operate responsibly.
